Text size Print This Page Send by emailWhen your in the Motherlode Area hiking trips are a popular activity. There are many hiking trails and destinations within the area to explore the natural beauty of the Sierra foothills and a wide diversity of terrains.
There are plenty of trails that follow or lead to rivers and lakes. The Motherlode area has many different kinds of trails for hikers of all accomplishments. It does not always take a mountain trail to create a great hiking experience, the open meadows and wildflowers of the Chinese Camp trails or hiking from Knights Ferry are two great examples of lower foothill trails that are both easy to access and wonderful to enjoy.
California has an excellent trail system and the Motherlode area trails include some incredible landmarks, as well as state and national parks. Yosemite National park protected since 1864 offers over 1000 miles of California’s natural beauty including numerous hiking trails, waterfalls, meadows, wildlife, ancient giant sequoias, and vast wilderness areas. Hiking opportunities are abundant around Yosemite, however this is a popular destination and planning ahead to visit is highly recommended. Hundreds of miles of trails can be found up hwy 108 into the Emigrant Wilderness and the Carson Iceberg Wilderness. At Kennedy Meadows you can find a popular stop for those traveling on the Pacific Crest Trail, where experienced hikers travel the trail that extends from Canada to Mexico.
Above the town of Murphy’s (A great place to shop, dine, or do some wine tasting!) on Hwy 4 just east of Arnold you can find the Calaveras Big Trees State Park and it’s Grove of giant sequoias. This grove includes some of the largest trees in the world, including numerous individually famous trees. This amazing park has a number of hiking trails and natural wonders to explore.
