Twain Harte is a small community just east of Sonora on your way up Hwy 108. Twain Harte is home to one of the better food markets in the area, (The Twain Harte Market) which strives to offer the best in local, regional, and international food products. You’ll find many unique and everyday items along with a good selection of food, wine, floral, and other specialty food items and a full service deli and olive bar. They work hard to integrate a wide variety of organic and natural foods into all areas of the store to accommodate all tastes. Twain Harte is also home to a public nine hole golf course featuring a small pub for drinks and bites after your round. Angels Camp is located along Hwy 49 also known as City of Angels is the only incorporated city in Calaveras County. With a population just under 5000 this old gold country town is also sometimes known as “frog Town” based on a Mark Twain tale and is celebrated with an annual Frog Jubilee at the Calaveras County Fairgrounds. It is a small town with total area of 9.3 km2 (3.6 mi2) and was founded by George Angel in 1849, who established a mining camp and trading store. Angles Camp was registered in 1938 as a California Historical Landmark and the Angels Camp museum was founded in 1951. The Angels Camp museum opens at 10:00 AM but is closed Tuesdays and Wednesdays. The Motherlode area offers a unique and excellent variety of wineries and wines in the beautiful sierra wine country. I like to tour the wineries and enjoy wine tasting rooms in and around Murphy’s. In some of the counties you can include activities such as a mystery theater, mountain biking or resort accommodations in your tour plans. Activities such as wine tasting seminars and walking vineyard tours are offered by family owned wineries in Santa Barbara, Sonoma Valley, Napa Valley and the Medocino area.
